Sep. 3rd, 2004 10:02 pmOK! Classes have started, and I guess it's time for my report.
They had me teach no less than FOUR classes in a row on my first day! I had three classes with the 3rd years, and one class with the 2nd years. My game worked pretty well with the 3rd years, but it was a little too hard for the 2nd years. It's a good thing I didn't have any 1st years cause I didn't know what I was going to do! The 3rd graders were all pretty into trying to guess my little clues, I had decided to make them guess rather than just straight out telling them stuff about me.
The 3rd year English teacher is a little scary. But I quickly noticed that she was teasing the students and goofing around with them, so I figured out that she just has an intimidating exterior, but is otherwise one of the cooler teachers in the place. She's older, probably in her 50's, but her English may be the best I've heard so far.
The second year English teacher is a man, and he's much more amiable from the outside.
I must have sucked a lot the first day because the 3rd year teacher was like "oh, this is your first time, isn't it?" I was feeling sorry for myself in the teacher's room not doing anything all during clean-up time, when I decided, what the hey? I'll just go out and talk with random students and get some pictures! It was pretty fun, I think most of the students appreciate me. Though there is this one girl that is obviously making fun of me when I say Hello in the halls. But whatever, let her have her fun, right?
I was so tired when I came home, I just wanted to go to sleep for the rest of eternity, but I had a lesson with my Japanese tutor. I accidentally fell asleep on my bed, was 15 min late meeting her, and to top it off I hadn't gone to the bank to get money to pay her with. I was totally useless for the whole lesson, like a zombie. She was so sweet about it though, I really like her a lot, and I'm sure if I think about what she was saying I'll learn a whole lot......
So now I'm REALLY tired, but I realize that I have to modify my lesson plans for the next day. I decided to keep the same thing for the 3rd years, but I needed to think about how to simplify my lesson for the 2nd and 1st graders. Especially the 1st graders.
I had three classes in a row today, one with each grade. 3rd grade class went by awesome. The scary/awesome 3rd grade teacher said I must have worked on my lesson because it was much better. Yey. 2nd grade class also went ok. 1st grade class the teacher, who is a sweetheart but has the worst English of all the teachers, had a different idea from mine as to what to do for the class, and so I had to improvise. It went so-so I think. I probably threw way too many vocab words at them, and made no sense whatsoever.
I think I don't like teaching the very low levels much. I'm really such an explanation oriented person, and my explanations in English are useless. And my Japanese isn't good enough to explain it that way, so it really frustrates me.
